American Hospital

American Hospital, known locally as Amerikan Hastanesi, was founded in 1920 by Rear Admiral Mark L. Bristol of the US Navy as the American Hospital of Constantinople — Turkey's first non-profit private hospital. Originally opened with 45 beds and 3 operating rooms in Çarşıkapı, the hospital moved to its current Nişantaşı location in 1939. In 1995 it joined the non-profit Vehbi Koç Foundation Healthcare Institutions, and in 2020 celebrated its 100th anniversary. American Hospital operates 232 patient rooms, 36 intensive care beds, 12 operating rooms, 161 outpatient clinic rooms, 46 observation beds and 19 chemotherapy units on its Nişantaşı campus, and holds a rooftop helipad for emergency transfers. In March 2024 it became the first private hospital in Turkey to receive ISO 14001 certification, alongside its existing ISO 9001, ISO 27001 and JCI accreditations.

Nişantaşı is Istanbul's most established luxury district, and the hospital's position there is a practical advantage rather than only a prestigious address. Boutique hotels, restaurants and pharmacies are within walking distance, Taksim and Maçka Park are a short walk away, and the district is connected to the rest of the European side by metro. For patients whose treatment spans several days with gaps between appointments, recovery time here does not feel like time spent in a hospital district.
